A team of leading-edge content providers and video companies are working together this week to stream a spectacular live concert over the Internet in full 1080p HD. The concert features Grammy Award-winning artist Imogen Heap, who plans to mount a one-of-a-kind performance that blends film, orchestra and fan participation with a traditional rock and pop set backed by a full band.

Partners Elemental, Akamai, Microsoft, iStreamPlanet and Rebild Productions will present a live web broadcast of the British singer-songwriter’s largest ever UK headline show from Royal Albert Hall in London on Friday, November 5, 2010 at 7pm GMT. The web broadcast is the first concert to stream live in 1080p HD over the Akamai HD Network using Microsoft IIS Smooth Streaming. The performance is available for viewing worldwide free of charge at http://www.resounde.com.

The live web broadcast is made possible by back-hauling the HD event feed from the venue in London to the iStreamPlanet Broadcast Operations Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. An Elemental Live system is then used to perform the heavy-duty encoding required to output seven adaptive bit rate streams formatted for Microsoft Smooth Streaming. The highest quality output will stream in 1080p at a peak rate of 5Mbps. Additional streams at lower resolutions and bit rates are available to adapt to changes or constraints in network conditions and to accommodate lower resolution display devices. Akamai acts as the CDN for the event, distributing all streams in real time via its global delivery network.

Streaming a live HD webcast at 1080p marks a significant milestone in bringing the online media experience ever closer to the superior quality available from broadcast television or Blu-ray content. Much as Dolby has progressed the audio experience to near perfection over years of development, video companies with innovative technologies are making dramatic strides in streaming increasingly high quality video online. Elemental is proud to play a key role in bringing this unique event to a worldwide audience in flawless HD. Be sure to tune in on Friday for an exceptional experience.
