Montevideo, Uruguay
A look back at August 18, 2016

At 5:00 pm local time, the Uruguayan state-owned telecommunications company Administración Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (Antel) and Elemental co-hosted a press event in Montevideo, Uruguay that was broadcast live over the Antel VeraTV OTT platform.

Replays of the event are now available on demand in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

The two companies described their work together in enabling live streaming coverage of the world’s biggest sporting event to millions of viewers across the country. It was also an opportunity to highlight the new Antel TIER III Datacenter, which is one of the most advanced in the Latin American continent and is powered by Elemental video processing.

Speakers during the event, which took place in the Antel business center, included: from Antel, Andrés Tolosa, President; Daniel Fuentes, Vice President; Gustavo Delgado, Board of Directors; plus a number Antel executives and managers. Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining for Uruguay Carolina Cross and Sam Blackman, Elemental CEO and Co-founder, also shared insights.

Tolosa expressed his pride in Antel being one of the first providers of streaming technology for the world’s biggest sporting event using the company’s Vera, VeraPlus and VeraTV services.

Blackman remarked on the advanced technologies innovated by the Antel team. “What Antel has built in Uruguay with its TIER III Datacenter is one of the most forward-looking architectures in the world.” Additionally, he added that the performance of the VeraTV app, when switching channels, is unsurpassed. “This is the fastest switching time I have ever experienced for a live streaming application,” said Blackman. “This is a significant achievement. There is anopportunity to scale this performance – it is valuable for consumers on a global basis.”

Carolina Cross spoke of Uruguay’s commitment to innovating for the future. She highlighted recent advancements including the opening of a Uruguayan chip manufacturing plant, an incubator for electronics and the National Development Agency’s angel fund to promote entrepreneurship and innovation, all in the spirit of advancing the well-being of the Uruguayan country and people.

The passion of the Antel team is pervasive – for their state-of-the-art facilities, for providing a superior viewing experience to their subscribers, for their generosity in ensuring equal access to broadband by providing laptops to every Uruguayan child, their ambition for expanding regional services, and finally, their enthusiasm for collaboration, which Elemental has experienced first-hand.

On August 17, 2016, Elemental announced that leading Latin American media companies Globosat, NET and Antel are all using software-defined video solutions to broadcast the world’s biggest sporting event. A special press event was held at Globosat headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with Elemental, Globosat, one of Latin America’s biggest pay TV operators and Brazil’s leading multi-channel broadcaster and content provider, and NET, a leading provider of pay TV and broadband Internet access services in Brazil and one of the world’s largest cable operators. The goal of the event was to showcase the technology innovations and services offering unprecedented access to these sporting events, delivered with superior quality across main screen and multiscreen devices to a global audience. An additional press event with Antel in Montevideo, Uruguay then followed on August 18, showcasing the telecommunications company VeraTV OTT offering.

These events were all about customers and their innovation – their excitement and pride in the facilities and advanced video and data infrastructures and networks they have built; their passion for assuring pervasive accessibility to content across their respective countries; and their drive to bring the best viewing experiences to consumers. Elemental was extremely pleased, humbled and fortunate to be part of this.

August 17th, 10:00am  - Welcome Reception

Industry journalists and analysts from the Americas received complimentary access to the Globosat SporTV app for live summer sports streaming.

10:30am  - Executive Insights Presentation

Hosted by Roberto Primo, CTO, Globosat; Marcio Carvalho, Director of Marketing, NET; and Sam Blackman, CEO, Elemental

As Roberto Primo took the stage, he discussed Globosat’s coverage and transmission of the world’s biggest sporting event in Rio, and how the company produced and transmitted 100 percent of the live events for distribution over a traditional pay TV infrastructure and an IP infrastructure for multiscreen devices. This live content is available to viewers via 16 fully produced linear channels as well as the SporTV app, where viewers can choose from 44 IP channels available on the internet.  This content is also available as video-on-demand. Globosat is storing approximately 30 hours of VOD content each day.

Two weeks before the games, Globosat had to add four channels and could do so without any extra hardware thanks to software-defined video.

In his presentation, Marcio Carvalho discussed how NET worked hard to deliver connectivity – or whatever anyone attending the world’s largest sports events would need to be connected to enable the consumption of content through WiFi and 4G networks throughout every area in the sports park. Carvalho highlighted how NET took advantage of the cloud and its ability to scale video processing up or down in line with demand.

To close the presentation, Sam Blackman explained in further detail the workflows enabling the successful video processing and delivery of this content from a unified headend, and the ability of software-defined video to provide end-to-end streaming architecture for primary screens, multiscreen, and 4K UHD delivery.

11:30am - A Behind-the-Scenes Facility Tour at Globosat

12:30pm – Lunch at CT and an Executive Panel Discussion

Executives from Globosat, NET and Elemental shared how they prepared to deliver the world’s biggest sports event; how story telling, production and delivery have changed in the last four years; new challenges and opportunities for content monetization; the evolution to a more immersive viewing experience; and the role of software-defined video in this progression.

2:00pm - Presentation Adjourns

Guests were invited to watch the decathlon semifinals event and relax on the beach.
